I live on the east coast. I was a dental assistant starting in 2000 w/o experience or certification. I started at $8 an hour and finished at $16 an hour in 2004. I think an experienced assistant can hope to make any where from 12 to 17 an hour to start on the east coast anyway. I am now a dental hygienist and make more than double what I was making at the end of my assisting career.
I loved dental assisting b/c it was not repetitive. You will not be board. As an assistant you assist the dentist of course. Some of your duties would include exposing dental radiographs, taking dental impressions, pouring dental models, making temporary crowns, making bleach trays, making custom trays,…these are just to name a few. Some procedures you may assist the dentist w/ include: Composite/Amalgam restorations (fillings), Crown/Bridge/Veneer preparation, Crown/Bridge/Veneer delivery, Root canal treatment, extractions, Removable appliances (Dentures/Partials). My only downside to assisting was that I knew I would never make as much as a dental hygienist… working just as hard.
There are certificate programs but some offices will hire you w/o experience. Just start by sending a resume and see what happens…you may be surprised.
