I will finish with a certificate in may. And i also would like to know if anyone knows anything about dental hygienist hands on training? I have applied for dental hygiene school but because i didnt have enough hands on training I didnt get accepted. I have taken all pre reqs available for just about anything!!! I applied for radiology program just havent heard yet if I got accepted. Im just kinda in a hole and need some advice on what my options are and how to go about succeeding!!. My main goal is to get accepted in a dental hygiene program, but Im having to have several options and it is a bit discourageing. Im a single mother with 2 children raising them on my own, and im about hour 1/2 away from the nearest dental hygiene school. A friend’s daughter had gotten trained on the job for dental hygiene and then helped her get into the dental hygiene school. That would be the most awsome thing to happen!!! Anyway thank you and I am hoping for a kick in the butt to the right direction to suceed for me and my kids!!!!
Dental hygienists and dental assistants are 2 different things.
You CANT get hands on training as a hygienist! It is against the law. No office can teach you how to be a hygienist (except maybe TX and alabama) before you become one.
Maybe they want you to OBSERVE? That you can do by simply calling your own dentist or any dental office and ask if you can come in and observe because you are trying to get into a hygiene program.
That friends daughter got trained as a dental ASSISTANT on the job, not a hygienist. She might have gone to dental assisting school which is a 1 year certificate program. Hygiene programs are 2 or 4 years long and you can’t be trained on the job ahead of time!
Do not apply to a program if you don’t even know what the proper name for the job title is.
Also just so you know nursing or surgical tech (1 year program S tech!) is a better option. Hygiene jobs are not plentiful right now in this economic recession.
